What Is the Resale Value of Lab-Grown Diamonds? Ivana Jewels Puts the Answer in Writing

80% on the diamond, 100% on the gold, for life: the buyback maths behind Ivana’s lab-grown diamond jewellery, with a worked example.

Surat, [date] October 2026 – Ivana Jewels, the Surat-based lab-grown diamond and Polki jewellery retailer, has published a step-by-step explanation of its lifetime buyback and exchange policy, so customers can work out what their jewellery is worth to the brand before they buy it. The disclosure answers the question first-time buyers ask most often about the resale value of lab-grown diamonds: what happens if I want to sell it back? At Ivana, the answer is not left to the market on the day; it is a written buyback rate, fixed before the sale.

What Ivana puts in writing

The policy is one page, published on the Ivana Jewels All Policies page and set out on the customer’s invoice:

  • Lifetime buyback: 80% of the prevailing diamond value and 100% of the prevailing gold value
  • Lifetime exchange: 100% of the prevailing diamond and gold value towards a new piece
  • Not returned: making charges, discounts availed at purchase, and GST
  • Polki: covered under lifetime buyback on the same terms; for exchange, Polki is exchanged against Polki
  • Diamond exchanges: diamond value is exchanged against diamond value; any balance is paid at the buyback rate
  • Replacement certificate: ₹2,000 per carat (IGI), ₹1,000 per carat (SGL)

How it works: a worked example

Illustrative figures only – not a customer transaction or a price forecast. Actual values depend on the prevailing diamond and gold rates on the day.

A customer buys a solitaire ring in 14kt gold:

At purchase

Diamond value

₹30,000

Gold value

₹15,000

Making charges

₹2,000

GST (3%)

₹1,410

Price paid

₹48,410

Some years later she brings it back. On that day, the prevailing values are ₹28,000 for the diamond and ₹17,000 for the gold.

If she sells it back (buyback):

80% × ₹28,000 diamond = ₹22,400 100% × ₹17,000 gold = ₹17,000 Payout: ₹39,400

If she upgrades (exchange):

100% × ₹28,000 + 100% × ₹17,000 Credit towards a new piece: ₹45,000

Two things the example shows:

  • Every component is visible: the customer can see what came back on the diamond, what came back on the gold, and what was never part of the buyback (making and GST).
  • The gold line works in the customer’s favour – with gold at record highs, the 100% gold value often rises between purchase and buyback.

How this compares with mined diamond jewellery

Natural diamonds are often assumed to “hold value.” The last four years say otherwise. Prices have fallen at every stage of the mined-diamond supply chain:

  • Rough: De Beers’ effective rough price index fell about 25% year on year in 2025, according to Rapaport, and the company cut its prices again at its first sale of 2026.
  • Polished: India’s average export price for polished natural diamonds fell from about $866 per carat in 2022 to about $758 in January–May 2026, according to Department of Commerce data.
  • Retail: a 1-carat natural diamond that cost about $6,000 in 2021 was closer to $4,200 by 2025, according to BriteCo pricing data.

And when a customer sells natural diamond jewellery back, the price is set by that jeweller’s own buyback terms, which are frequently not published at all.

The real difference for a buyer, in other words, is not natural versus lab-grown. It is whether the exit terms are written down before the sale.

Three questions that decide resale value, at any jeweller

Anyone buying diamond jewellery, from any seller, should ask three things:

1.          What percentage of the diamond value do you buy back?

2.          What percentage of the gold value do you buy back?

3.          What is deducted?

If the answer is not in writing, assume zero.

“A buyback is only worth something if you can read it before you buy. We publish ours as two numbers – 80% of the diamond’s value on the day you bring it back, 100% of the gold – and we show the customer exactly how the payout is calculated. If a jeweller won’t give you those numbers in writing, you don’t have a buyback; you have a hope.” – Ayushi Jindal, Co-founder, Ivana Jewels
